the FORGOTTEN
AMADEA SAFEHOUSE
Pretoria, South Africa
Description
The Amadea Safe House is a refuge for children. It is where the government places the children under their care. The children leave when the government has decided where they can go, be it in orphanages or with foster parents, for a more permanent care. Mainly younger than 5 years old, the toddlers have been taken away from their parents for various reasons. Some guardians were irresponsible and neglected their newborns. Others mistreated them, abusing them sexually, emotionally, and physically. In many cases, infants were abandoned because of their state of health. Their afflictions include being physically disabled, mentally ill, and HIV/AIDs positive. For whatever the reason they were abandoned, once the children reach Amadea Safe House, they are each ensured “a loving and safe haven.”
Over the past 15 years, Amadea Safe House has cared for approximately 300 children. The non-profit organization provides the children with everything, from basic needs, such as meals, clothing, and attention, to more specific care, such as medication, education, and vaccination. There is even a playground and trampoline that the children play on joyfully, speaking Afrikaans to one another. Each child has been taught proper manners and etiquette, even at such a young age. During the visit, when my family and I gave them sweets, they all said “dankie,” translating to thank you in English.
No matter how noble their cause, Amadea Safe House still has its difficulties. Each month, it is a struggle to find enough money to even be able to feed each child. Supplies are often running low despite grueling efforts. Other than trouble with basic needs, there is also the issue of sewage. Each cleaning, is quite expensive but is unfortunately as often as twice a month.
Any donations would be of utmost help to the community.
